Artist Statement Doug MacDonald (Woody) When I work with the canvas I’m reminded that there are no restrictions and that I’m totally free to create what ever comes to me. I begin a piece by choosing the palette and then begin to draw on the canvas with either a black oil stick or a sharpie. Once I feel that I need to add some color I try to choose the lighter colors first. I like to do this because it can give a nice glow behind the more bold colors that I use later in the painting. I work in many layers at times and then some work is done with bold uses of a single color. I know my work is done when I feel that there is a balance between composition and color. Plus I like to make sure I’m comfortable with it and that it makes me feel something. Good or bad, it doesn’t matter as long as it makes me feel something other than just, I like the colors. When my work is going well I get in a grove and it seems that every brush stroke is being guided by something other than me. I guess you could call it “In the zone”. I like to listen to music when I paint and I let it influence my thoughts and decisions as I’m painting.
